CODING

What is coding?

Coding is the underlying structure of all online technology. Within each game, website or computerized device, area millions of lines of codes that have been crafted to create the technology we often take for granted each day.

Allowing students an opportunity to learn to code gives them:

- an appreciation of technology

- an opportunity to problem solve

- an understanding of how games work

- a chance to create their own games and apps!

Ways to learn coding:

There are many online games and sites that help to teach children (and adults!) to code. Below is a list of the most popular ones used by students in my class. (please note I have no affiliation with these products - they are just ones that we enjoy and learn from!)

Hour of Code:

https://code.org/learn

The Code.org website is a fantastic introduction to coding! They have created a series of videos and games to help students get interested in coding, and provides them with a numbers of opportunities to try out their skills. Code.org uses games like angry birds and minecraft to get students invested in the learning.

The OSMO:

https://www.playosmo.com/en/

The OSMO has a new coding activity that even the youngest learners can use. This program works with the camera on the ipad and allows students the chance to physically move pieces around to help the main character move through the game.

The Foos:

http://thefoos.com/

The Foos is an amazing free app that guides students step by step through an introduction to coding in a fun and exciting way! There is a free trial available through the app - or talk to your child's teacher about setting up a free teacher account!

Scratch:

https://scratch.mit.edu/

https://www.scratchjr.org/

Scratch is an online program for more advanced coders. It allows students opportunities to begin using their coding language to create actual games and apps. There is also a Jr. version available as an apple app for younger students.

BitsBox:

https://bitsbox.com/

Bitsbox is a newer program that get students to move from the game type aspects of coding, and into actual code writing, while still maintaining the fun aspects that will keep students engaged. There is a free trail program, but also a monthly subscription that mails students with new activities and guided challenges.
