ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION

 

Addition and subtraction can be seen as the putting together and taking apart of numbers.

 

Addition and Subtraction math games can help children begin to work with numbers and connect them to their everyday life.

 

Grade 1 - compose and decompose numbers to 20

Grade 2 - compose and decompose 2-digit numbers

Grade 3 - compose and decompose numbers to 1000

Grade 4 - compose and decompose 4-digit numbers

Grade 5 - compose and decompose numbers to 100,000

Grade 6 - compose and decompose 6-digit numbers

 

GAMES

Roll 12

 

Instructions:

Roll 1 die, or roll 2 dice and add the numbers together. Put a check under that number on the 1-12 board. Take turns rolling until one person has all 12 boxes checked off.

 

Variations:

Longer play - get 2 or 3 checks in each box.

 

Skills:

Quick Add / Subtract

 

Instructions:

Roll 2 dice and add the numbers together.

or

Roll 2 dice and subtract the numbers.

 

Strategies:

1. Add all the dots (counting by 1's).

(4+2 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)

2. Say the largest number and count by 1's (counting on)

(4+2 = 4, 5, 6)

 

Skills:

- subtracting from 6

Gimme 10

 

Instructions:

Roll 1 die. What other number do you need to make 10?

 

Strategies:

'Gimme 10' Boards

Addition Bingo

 

Instructions:

Roll 2 dice. Each person crosses that number off once on their bingo card. First person to get 5 in a row, wins!

 

Variations:

Extend the game by clearing the whole board.

2-Digit Domines

 

Instructions:

Lay all domines face down. Flip over 2 dominos and stack them on top of each other to make 2 2-digit numbers. Add these two numbers together.

 

(ex: flip over a domino with a 3 and a 3 - makes 36 or 63)

 

Variations:

Subtract the 2 numbers, lowest number wins!

- subtracting 2-digit numbers

 

Dice in Dice

 

Instructions:

Using dice-in-dice, roll 2 dice. Outer number is the tens, inner number is the ones. Add the 2 dice-in-dice together.

 

(ex: die #1 -  5 outside, 3 inside = 53)

 

Variations:

Subtract the lower number from the higher number.

- adding past 100

- subtracting 2-digit numbers

Memory 10

 

Instructions:

Separate 2 suits (1-9). Place all cards face down. Take turns flipping over 2 cards. If your cards add up to 10, you keep the cards. If not, flip them back over. Person with the most cards at the end, wins!

 

Variations:

Subtract the low card from the high card - low score wins!

2 Card Draw

 

Instructions:

Each person draws 2 cards from the pile. Add the 2 numbers together. High score wins!
